AI and work

Which jobs is AI changing?

AI mainly changes tasks, and in most occupations the work stays. But not everywhere to the same degree: in some occupations AI can already do many tasks largely on its own, and that is where the first effects on starters and freelancers show. Choose your occupation and see what AI can already do, what stays human work and how to adapt.

    • Check what AI gives you, especially on safety, health and rules: AI sounds certain, even when it is wrong.
    • In healthcare, the work stays human work and shortages remain. AI can help with record keeping; mind privacy and only use what your organisation allows.

Exposure says what AI can do in principle, not how many jobs disappear.

What changes, what is under pressure, what grows

What research and figures show now, in the Netherlands and elsewhere. Measured unless marked as an expectation. Click an occupation to open it in the tool above.

    Changing a lot, staying

Many tasks shift, but no decline in work has been measured (yet).

    Under pressure, possibly less work

Here we already see fewer vacancies, assignments or jobs, or agencies expect it.

    Growing or staying scarce

Occupations where demand stays high, and new work around AI.

Counterpoint Across the whole economy, no clear effect of AI on employment or unemployment has been measured yet. The OECD says the role of language models in young people's labour market difficulties appears limited so far, and points to the economy. That may change: the OECD calls its conclusion preliminary. OECD Employment Outlook 2026

    Where are the opportunities?

Work is disappearing, and work is being created. This is where the opportunities are now.

    What can you do now?

Concrete steps, with what actually exists in the Netherlands (as of October 2026). Most of these are in Dutch.

    1. Look at your own tasks

Choose your occupation above. Try AI first on one task you do often, and keep track of what it delivers and what you need to fix.

    2. Learn to instruct AI and check the outcome

Those who learn to give AI clear instructions and judge the results critically stand stronger, says UWV, which gives five tips for keeping up.

      UWV (Dutch)
    3. Take a free basic course

The Nationale AI-Cursus is free and online, with chapters on prompting, AI at the office, the AI Act and the effects on the labour market.

      ai-cursus.nl
    4. Ask your employer for training

Of employers that use AI, 61 percent guide their staff in using it. Ask for it. Small and medium-sized employers can apply for the SLIM subsidy; the 2026 rounds are closed and the next one has not been announced.

      UWV, 2026 (Dutch)
    5. Get free advice at a Werkcentrum

Every labour market region has a Werkcentrum run by municipalities, UWV, employers, unions and education, for anyone with questions about work, including learning or switching careers.

      werkcentrum.nl
    6. See which occupations are promising

UWV tracks which occupations are promising and least promising, and why. Compare pay and workload too before you switch.

      UWV, promising occupations (Dutch)
    7. Show what you make with AI

Especially as a starter or freelancer: a portfolio of real work says more than a CV. On actiefai you show what you made and what your part was, and you find assignments where AI plays a role.

    Where does this come from?

For 2025, the ILO estimated per occupation and per task how much of it generative AI can do, based on a survey of workers, experts and an AI model. Occupations fall into six groups, from not exposed to highest exposure. We link those scores to the occupational groups of Statistics Netherlands (CBS) using the key from the Beroepenindeling ROA-CBS 2014 (2025 edition): what share of workers in each group work in which ISCO occupation.

An occupation counts as "AI can do many tasks" if at least 40 percent of its workers are in the two highest groups, and as "Some of the tasks" if at least 40 percent are in one of the four exposed groups. The tasks come from the ISCO occupations that employ at least a quarter of the group (always the largest), and each occupation shows which ones: under "AI can largely do this already" the tasks with a medium or high score, under "This stays mostly human work" those with a low or very low score.

Exposure is not a prediction. The ILO itself says it is about what AI can do in principle, not about jobs disappearing. Whether work disappears depends on what companies do, on the economy and on demand. That is why this page also shows measurements and counterpoints. Robots and other automation are not counted. The ILO has no scores for military occupations; they are listed, without exposure.
